How You Do Money is How You Do Everything – There is a Formula for Creating and Keeping More Money in Your Life

Most People Struggle with Their Relationship with Money, Personally and in Their Businesses.

  1. They want more money to do the things that are important to them, like build a business, send their kids to the best schools, enjoy family holidays, take great vacations, pay off debt, and save for retirement. But they often find themselves at a loss as to how to create and keep more money.
  2. They’re also often uncomfortable talking about money which means if they’re an entrepreneur they hesitate to ask for the sale, apologize for their fees or include too much in their packages. And if they have a job they’ll find themselves contributing more than what they’re compensated for.
  3. Whether they’re an entrepreneur or have a job, it’s common to for people to feel that money is a necessity of life that they don’t feel in control of.

The reason situations like these are a problem is because if you’re not in control of money in your life, then money is controlling you. Or you’re always feeling some kind of stress regarding money and that stress is holding you back from multiplying your income and multiplying how much money you get to keep and spend every month. Another reason situations like these are a problem is because if you’re not valuing yourself or standing in your power with money (undercharging for your services), then you’re not able to live up to your potential, make an impact or live the lifestyle you desire most.

5 Key Areas for Creating and Keeping More Money

There are 5 key areas that make up the formula for creating and keeping more money. We frequently fall into traps in these areas that derail us or that make making and saving money more difficult.

1. Forgiveness

Many of us have all sorts of baggage around money that we need to just get rid of or let go of. This baggage may sound like this:

  • I heard or felt conflict about money when growing up.
  • The people around me don’t always speak positively about money.
  • I feel guilty or shameful about debt.
  • I want to create a new family money legacy for myself and for the people who are important to me!

Feelings like this can unconsciously hold you back from producing consistent income and having a good relationship with money. It is as if you keep hitting your own money glass ceiling when what you desire is to be more financially successful in your life.

2. Boundaries

Setting appropriate boundaries can be difficult, so many of us just ignore them and tolerate a lot of unnecessary stuff.

  • I often feel uncomfortable discussing money, so I just don’t talk about it – with my spouse, with my employer, with my creditors, with my business partners, with customers who owe me money – you get the picture, avoidance gets you nowhere.
  • I have not increased my income over the past year.
  • I often under value what I am worth – give away my time, give away my services.
  • I want to value myself while honoring others, so I make and keep more money!

If these statements resonate with you then you are likely putting the needs and wishes of others first and you probably often feel that money is just something that happens to you, instead of feeling in control of money.

3. Action

  • I often put off paying or managing bills.
  • I would like to save money, but I am not sure how to make this happen.
  • I don’t track my income to the penny every day, for business owners this translates to not knowing if your business is making money and viable.
  • I want simple money systems that allow me to feel confident and in control, and help me create greater income.

If two or more of these statements feel true for you, it may mean you have fallen in to the trap of missing simple systems for handling your money, your bills and maybe even debt payoff. It also means you may be missing out on simple opportunities that would help you get ahead of your bills and create more income.

4. Empowerment

  • I under-charge or am under compensated for my expertise.
  • When I think about making more money it feels overwhelming or that I am just going to have to work harder.
  • I often secretly have doubts about my financial decisions.
  • I want to stand in my power with money and increase my financial self-worth!

A typical trap around empowerment is that you are inwardly not sure how to stand in your value and be compensated highly for your expertise. This is a common trap and breaking free of it creates dramatic, positive improvements.

5. Mindset

  • I know my money mindset impacts my actions around money and other things.
  • I would love a new money mindset but I am not sure what it would be.
  • Many things in my life are going great, I just need a shift regarding money.
  • I want to create a mindset of unlimited opportunities for me to increase my self-worth and my net worth!

If you say yes to two or more of these statements then you know you would benefit from a shift in your mindset. You may just need a fresh perspective to help you see what’s possible for yourself and how to keep yourself focused on where you want to be, instead of where you are right now.

Can You Make Money with the Niche You Feel Called to Serve? Yes! (And if you think your niche is the problem, you’re wrong!) Clarity of Communication, Part 1 of 2

Can you believe it’s February, already? No? We can’t either! We’re 2 months into 2016, and we’ve already made some fascinating discoveries about how we can most effectively help YOU reach your coaching and business goals.

A couple of months ago, we sent out a survey, with the intention of really getting to know you. Like, deeply.

One of the questions we asked was “’What are your biggest challenges?” because you know we’re ALL about providing you with solutions.

One topic came up over and over again – how to clarify – and make money in – the niche you feel called to serve.

It seems that many times, when coaches struggle to make money, the first thing they think is that it must be a problem with their chosen niche.

But that’s NOT the problem.

In our experience, and the experience of people we’ve worked with, the biggest factor in your success is clarity.

You need clarity in:

  • Understanding the challenges your ideal clients face, and the solutions to those challenges.
  • The exact words and phrases your ideal clients use to describe their challenges.
  • Communicating clearly how you can help your ideal clients solve their problems!

You see, clarity is key in growing your business, no matter what your niche is.

To prove it, we wanted to share examples of some of our colleagues who are making 6 or 7 figures in really “quirky” niches.

These include one woman who teaches people how to work with their dogs (think agility training, communication, behavioral training).

Another colleague coaches and consults with clients in alternative investing, such as placing ATM machines.

Another is a tennis coach. (That’s right. Tennis. A hobby, for most!)

People are thriving in these specialty niches, which proves that they’ve truly honed in on the pain and pleasure island points of the people they want to serve.

 Bottom line: it’s all about clarity of communication.

“But what if I live in a rural Illinois town with a population of 2000?”

“But what if my niche is really quirky, like mine? (I knit sweaters from cat hair.)”

“But what if my clients don’t earn lots of money to pay me?”

We hear your “buts.”

And we answer them all the same:

If you gain clarity around your prospects’ challenges, the solutions you present, and then communicate clearly, you can make money in any niche, in a town of any size, serving any type of client.

So, the first step is to articulate the challenges your prospects face, and how their lives would be different if they solved those problems.

You see, “niche” is more than a description of a group of people. It’s a set of challenges or needs that group of people experience, and more importantly, that they want resolved. Your products and services help them to overcome those challenges needs.

In order to clarify your niche, you must fully understand the needs.

So let’s revisit one of those quirky niche examples we shared with you. For the tennis coach, the niche isn’t “tennis players.” The niche is tennis players who want to serve better and win games (or, who want to stop losing).

Our niche here at The Coaches Console is not “start up coaches.” Rather, it’s coaches who are struggling to get clients and make money in their business.  We narrow our focus to a select group of people (start-up coaches) experiencing those particular challenges and needs.

To find your niche, you must first define a group of people, and then narrow that group down to a sub-group experiencing a specific challenge or need.

Get to know these challenges and their solutions, and get to know them well … in your ideal clients’ words, not your own! This is SO important – don’t guess or “take a stab at it,” which is what we see coaches doing over and over again. The more you can dial in to exactly what is keeping your ideal clients up at night, worrying, the better you can communicate with them, and offer your solution to their current pain.

There are 2 powerful ways to get to know how your prospects or ideal clients describe their challenges and solutions: via phone, or via email.

Call 3-5 people, or send a quick email to your current clients. Ask them the following questions:

  1. When you lie awake at night because you’re stressed out and can’t sleep, what words and thoughts run through your head about the biggest challenges you are currently facing in ____ {insert desired area of focus, i.e. business, relationship, health, etc.}?
  2. If you could wave a magic wand, and time and money were of no concern, what are the goals and results that you most desire in ___{insert desired area of focus i.e. business, relationship, health, etc}?

Be sure to write down the precise words they use to describe what they’re facing, and how their lives would be different if they solved these challenges.

I find that by playing the game, clients start to connect how their negative beliefs hold them back from what they desire; and begin to get how life changing a positive belief can be.The more they play it, the more they prove to themselves they really can let go of the beliefs that aren’t working and pick new ones that do.Stubbornness and ego are left behind and beliefs that seemed immutable transform to possibilities.

Maybe the above scenario of a Universal Store of Unlimited Beliefs sounds wild and far fetched; but with an open-mind and lots of practice you really can choose beliefs that create miracles in your life.I invite you to explore the life changing possibility of being able to choose beliefs, just like you would your grocery items at a grocery store, picking out items based on your preferences, goals and desires

Choose your beliefs by how they make you feel. A life changing game to create miracles in your life.

We start with the premise that we all want the same things: to enjoy life, to have life go well for us, to feel comfortable in our bodies and peaceful in our minds.

Then, let the game begin.

First identify a belief that isn’t working.

How can you tell a belief isn’t serving you? You aren’t getting positive results from it, and by the negative emotion it elicits.

Example of a belief that isn’t serving you: ‘As we grow older our health fails.’

Emotions resulting from this belief would be feelings of hopelessness and fear, emotions that don’t inspire positive actions.If we feel hopeless or fearful why bother trying?

Don’t fool yourself by thinking that just because the belief feels true or familiar that it’s unchangeable.

When you take the time to reflect on evidence from your life proving these beliefs are not serving you, letting go of them feels logical and safe.

Your mind is made to learn. A natural part of learning is letting go of beliefs and patterns of thought that don’t work and incorporating new beliefs and thought patterns that do.

Pick a different belief that if you believed it, would feel good.

An example might be ‘my body has the ability to heal.’

At first most clients answer but I don’t believe it. “That’s OK.” I say, “The question isn’t do you believe this?but,if you did believe it how would it make you feel?”

They might say, “If I believed ‘my body had the ability to heal’, it would give me comfort and hope. I guess from a place of hope I’d feel encouraged to seek answers or take positive actions.I guess this belief could serve me better.

Then I ask the client to go ahead and imagine they did believe the belief, and imagine the feelings of comfort and hope.

The mind can’t tell the difference between what is imagined and what is real.So if you imagine feeling peaceful you fool yourself into believing you are peaceful, and guess what you become peaceful.

Real life examples:

By changing my belief I was able to be present and joyful. A common belief ‘we can’t change beliefs, that’s just the way it is.’

Recently my daughter gave birth to a healthy baby. There were medical complications and she was induced. One of my thoughts before her labor: I’m scared for my grandchild and daughter. As soon as the thought cropped up I’d ask how does that thought make you feel? Answer, scared. What would you like to believe? I’d like to believe that everything turns out alright.

I made a guided meditation for myself. I imagined angelic beings surrounding the child and my daughter, and I imagined the birthing room filled with joyful, peaceful, and healthy energy. I imagined my daughter at home enjoying her new child and a sense of well-being for the whole family. It brought me soothing, relief, peace, and positive expectations and allowed me to enjoy the now moments along the way and be present with my other granddaughter as we awaited the birth of her sister.

This relaxed meditative state allowed a quick release of my fears and was an open receptive state for soaking up the positive affirmations. I listened to it again and again to reinforce the new patterns of thought I desired.Listening to soothing music, doing a relaxing activity or breath work while stating the desired beliefs can be effective too.

Choose a belief that works for you. Believing in angelic beings might be too far-fetched for you, but hey, it worked for me.Maybe you believe in science and you read a statistic that 90 percent of the women who have this condition go on to deliver healthy babies.It doesn’t matter if angelic beings are real or if the statistic is true. What matters is does this belief make you feel better right now.

By changing her beliefs her health dramatically improved. A common belief ‘we need to choose beliefs by what is true or based on past or present reality.’

I had a client who believed as we age, our health deteriorates.This belief made her feel scared and frightened of the future; but she had ample evidence of this from serious health issues she was experiencing and the majority of her peers were in agreement and had confirmed her belief with their ever increasing issues.

I asked “Are you open to the belief that ‘as you grow older, your body becomes more comfortable and healthy?’ ” “But that’s not true,” she replied. “What if you did believe it? How would that feel?” I asked. “Well …good,” she hesitantly replied, “…but ‘everyone knows you fall apart as you age.’ ”

Even if 9 out of 10 doctors recommend a belief, or the majority of the population holds it as true, being willing to choose beliefs that make you feel good are what will serve your life.

In our sessions we explored what beliefs were serving her life, and what beliefs weren’t. As she selectively let go of thought patterns that made her feel fearful, and chose beliefs that made her feel good, miracles happened.

During our time together she released fibromyalgia, allergies, neck pain; a skin and nerve condition started to heal; and her heart healed to a point where it was functioning close to normal capacity.

New beliefs led to peace, solutions and answers. A common fear is ‘what if I end up being disappointed because the belief doesn’t come true?’

I had a client who felt desperate and panicky because her spouse was in crisis and needed immediate help. She was consumed by fear,dread and panic, leading to emotional paralysis. A relative offered to pay for 3 months of rehabilitation and pay rent and other expenses to see her family through. My client felt incredible relief and peace.The relative didn’t come through but the peace and relief she experienced served her well and had given her a week of relief. In a workshop she allowed the relief and peace to stay by choosing the belief, ‘answers can come in different ways’. Answers and solutions did unfold in ways she couldn’t have guessed.

Trust things will sort themselves out.Let the belief do it’s magic in the now moment by bringing you peace.From a place of optimism and well-being, creativity flows, and we are open to seeing solutions and answers. From a place of fear, thinking is cloudy, and we notice other looming problems, or we feel paralyzed  and mentally and physically drained.

By letting go, she felt renewed energy and confidence. A common concern ‘what if I pick a belief that feels good and ignore actions I should have taken?’

I had a client who felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for three young kids. She thought that to be a good parent she had to focus on the children’s faults so she could fix them.This belief was reinforced by teachers and extended family. This left her feeling pressured, stressed,short- fused, and low energy. In sessions we explored different beliefs that might bring her peace.She chose these: ‘My kids are lovable, gifted and unique, and I’m a lovable, capable parent who continues to learn as I go along the way.’ By allowing her self to focus on her kids in a positive way, issues and problems came into perspective. With the new beliefs came beautiful changes. She had renewed energy, found creative solutions to problems, and felt a re-connection with her self-esteem and confidence.

Don’t beat yourself up for having beliefs that aren’t working. You’re in good company; welcome to the human race!We all do the best we can from where we’re at. Come with a beginner’s mind, explore and experiment, and try it out for yourself.Start with beliefs that don’t feel too outlandish to you, then have fun building from there.

5 People Who Inspired Me – And Still Provide Me with Fuel To This Day

It’s the start of a new year. The time to think ahead. That time when we’re encouraged to get ambitious, set goals, reach for the stars. Well, for the next 5 minutes, I’d like to ask you to resist that urge. Instead look backwards, and downwards. Allow the people on whose shoulders you stand to re-inspire you for the year ahead. As you read about 5 people who inspired me, become aware of the energy you already carry within you, the fuel that you already have available to rise up to meet whatever lies before you in this new year.

1. The school principal who practiced deep democracy before it had been invented

She strode across the playground, a small, slender-framed woman dressed in her white habit and black wimple – Mother Joan. She could have been a character from The Sound of Music, but she was my primary school principal. Vibrant. Tenacious. A pragmatic idealist. Committed to weaving a social fabric of dignity and respect amongst all who worked and played at her school. Teachers and pupils alike.

“What’s happening here?” she’d say, taking us by surprise as she appeared as if from nowhere. “What’s the matter?” she asked the crying 8 year old. “They won’t let me play with them” the girl wailed. “Yes, but she interfered with our skipping game” protested another. “Girls, girls, girls. Slow down. Eyes up. Look at me. This is not the way we go about letting each other know how we feel”. Holding each child’s gaze for a moment, she then asked “so who can tell me about how she is feeling and what needs to happen to put things right amongst you?” A quiet girl lifted her chin and said “I feel upset. The skipping game was nearly won and then she messed it up. I was so close to beating the record”. The small white figure stepped closer to the upset girl placing herself as a bridge connecting the two. With a small delicate hand she gestured to the alleged transgressor standing sulking, but no longer wailing. “So you’re upset at what she did. Please tell her how you feel. And also tell her what you’d like, so that things will be alright enough for the game to continue”. A longish pause ensued in which no one interrupted. We felt as if Mother Joan’s eyes were looking at us all simultaneously. Not punitively but reassuringly. “I’m upset. I wanted to go for the record. You messed up our game just when it was so exciting. I want another go and I want you to sit out.” All Mother Joan asked was “Done?” with one eyebrow lifted higher than the other. A nod. Then it was the wailer’s turn. We didn’t like the wailer much. “I asked and asked for a turn and she just kept on jumping. She wouldn’t let me have a turn. I got cross.’ And then the surprise happened. ‘I’d like you both to sit out for at least two turns. Sit nearby each other. While the others are skipping, talk about this a bit more, just enough so you can get back to playing together again. When you are BOTH ready to do that, feel free to get up and start joining in. And girls, when they are ready you let them do some double skipping together.” And with a small smile, she was gone.

Give people a framework, some time and some space, and a way to get back on track, and leave them to it.

2. The teacher who knew that learning is a multi-faceted opportunity to dabble in diversity

She announced that we were going to be learning about the locust for the next few days. Then she announced that we were going to be learning about the locust in different ways. She asked us to listen carefully and decide in which group we’d like to be. All groups would be presenting what they had learned to the class the following week. The choices were:

  • Going to the library and looking up information
  • Heading to the top corner of the field and searching for live locusts to observe in their natural habitat
  • Spending time in the art corner drawing pictures of locusts
  • Gathering in the small hall to prepare a play with a locust as the main character
  • Going to interview the school gardeners

We spent some hours over the next days gathering information and preparing our presentations. Each group took their turn. Then the magic started.

As a class we were asked: “What did you learn about the locust from the library group, that only the library group could tell us about?

What did you learn about the locusts from watching the play, that only the drama group could have let you know about the locust?

And so on. Followed by more discussion about what it was about the method of learning that made it possible to get to know something particular about the locust that was hidden if looking from a different perspective.

How you approach a topic both opens up and closes down what you can learn about that topic

3. The man who knew the value of routine

I’d heard a sudden tinkle and looked up. His wife sat slumped forward in her deckchair, the glass no longer holding her lunchtime mint drink, rolling slowly across the flagstones. A strange raspy sound alerted us that all was not well. An expanding puddle of urine mixing with the spilled drink told me something was very wrong. We carried her to the day bed in the shade on the verandah, and sat with her as she left this life – shocked and silent at this event that was turning our lives upside down.

Later we made our way home, each isolated in grief and a myriad of questions to which there never were to be answers.

In the morning after his wife’s passing, I apprehensively approached his kitchen where they’d usually had breakfast each day. Expecting a silent empty room, I was taken aback. There, quietly poaching his usual egg while the toaster popped his half slice of toast, he stood. Somehow smaller, somehow duller, and yet getting on with his morning routine.

A week later, I again went by in the early morning – just to satisfy myself that he truly was ok. This time I dared to ask him “How do you think you are going to manage?” “I have no idea” he said. “What I do know is that I know how to get up each day and make an egg with half a slice of toast. I do know how to go to the library each Tuesday and return and select more books. I know how to take the dog for a walk before the sun sets each evening. So, I guess I will keep doing the things I know how to do until I start to know how to do this thing that I have no idea how to do’. He lifted a toast soldier, dipped it into the egg yolk, and took a small bite. Crunch, chew, swallow. Next piece.

When in turmoil, keep doing what is familiar until what is disturbing loses some of its sharp edges.

4. The coach who wanted to expand her vulnerability in order to achieve excellence

‘I really struggle with finding the right words. My words just won’t come out sometimes’, she said as a way of explaining why she had decided to embark on coaching supervision. There were many pauses and ‘ums’ as she made this statement. Signs that we were in for a challenging and interesting ride. ‘What approach to coaching have you been using up to now?’ I asked. She told me about her training in an approach rich in names for concepts, and with phrases for describing processes. Hmmm, thought I. ‘She wants to exchange the ease of drawing on a ready made vocabulary, for the stress of having to consider and select each word deliberately with only the topic and the client’s preferred language patterns to guide her. Interesting coach this one. I look forward to hearing more about her good reasons for wanting to set herself the task of becoming excellent in the area she describes as her vulnerability.’

We met about 10 times across two years. Each time she brought a piece of her coaching. Each time we reflected on small shifts in her language that she was experimenting with in order to be of better service to her clients. With each experiment, for example, replacing ‘but’ with ‘and’, she unfolded more and more sophisticated understanding and use of language. Her competence sky-rocketed, her confidence blossomed, her clients received excellent service. Ironically, her fluency did not get much better. But, her potency in asking powerful questions, and her support to her clients’ forward-movement through her summaries was a delight to witness.

Fluency is not a necessary characteristic of masterful coaching. Designing questions and statements containing carefully selected words that stay close to the client’s utterances, are.

5. The post-grad student who looked at life through a different lens

They sat with bated breath, waiting for him to speak. He’d attended the developmental psychology module by arriving just in time to sign the register each day. He sat slightly apart, this man – a grown up boy from the other side of the tracks, who’d skipped school to help his granny sell vegetables at market. “I think middle class children are very disadvantaged. If either of their parents is mentally unwell or just difficult, they are captive behind their walls with their big security gates. Not me. I belonged to a whole neighbourhood – in and out of people’s houses. It didn’t matter if dad was drinking too much, or mom was too tired to feed me. There was always a hearth and home with a welcoming grownup to flee to. Not one, but many adults helped me grow up to be a decent man.’ An awkward perturbed silence floated from face to face gazing at him in puzzlement. And so he said it again: ‘I think middle class children are the truly disadvantaged ones in this fractured society of ours.’

It takes a village to raise a child.

Most of my life has been a struggle. I knew I was capable but I didn’t feel good about myself and my life just didn’t work.
