Running a coaching certification is different from running a standard course. The stakes are higher. Your graduates carry your name. If they’re underprepared, that reflects on you, your brand, and the coaching profession.

After working with coaches who run certification programs since 2004, here’s what I know: your platform choice can make or break the experience — for your students AND for your credibility.

What does a coaching certification platform need?

1. Structured progression. Module 3 requires completing Module 2. No skipping ahead. Your platform needs sequential unlocking.

2. Assessment and evidence. Students demonstrate competency through written reflections, recorded coaching sessions, peer feedback — not just quizzes.

3. Cohort management. Certifications run in cohorts. You need to manage multiple cohorts simultaneously and duplicate your program for each new group.

4. Attendance and participation tracking. Many certification bodies require documented participation — not just “completed a module” but “engaged in discussions, attended live sessions, submitted assignments.”

5. Live supervised practice. Coaching certifications include observed sessions and mentor coaching. Your platform needs integrated live sessions, not a separate Zoom link in an email.

6. Peer practice community. Your cohort needs to practice with each other. Per-lesson discussion and peer pairing matter.

I teach coaches about the Four Quadrants of Learning: from Unconscious Incompetence (you don’t know what you don’t know) through Conscious Competence (it takes effort) to Unconscious Competence (your zone of genius). A certification platform needs to support all four quadrants — with structure, practice, feedback, and community at each stage.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to building a coaching certification program.

How much should you pay for a certification platform?

Certification programs charge $2,000-10,000 per participant. Your platform cost should be under 2% of revenue.

On Ruzuku ($83/month = $996/year) with zero fees, a program generating $50,000-200,000/year pays less than 1% to the platform.

On Teachable’s Starter plan, you’d pay 7.5% of $100,000 — $7,500 going to Teachable. See what Teachable actually costs for course creators.
